French Horn Practice

Is it the mouthpiece, the change of horn, or do i need to practice more?

Ok ive played french horn since seventh and im a sophmore but i didnt practice all summer until marching band and i played mellophone with an MC cup instead of my former years playing with MDC cup but on the mellophone my tone quality sounded perfect. It was not until I put the MC cup mouthpiece on my french horn to where it sounded discusting. I had always had perfect tone quality and now it sounds shaky jumpin from note to note and buzzing just stops at times and im playing air. Also take in the fact that my lips are thick

It’s probably a combination of things. If it’s your embouchure, you really need to find a professional horn teacher. Embouchure is very important. I played clarinet before playing horn and brought the tucked in underlip with me. That was the first thing Clyde Miller (Dallas Sym) changed about my embouchure.

You may be using too much pressure. Take it easy, play plenty of low, long notes and try to get perfect intonation with scales.

I think you will begin to like your horn sound once you get the mellophone sound out of your ears.

Buy The Art of Horn Playing by Phil Farkas and use it. A private teacher is the best advice anyone can give you.
