what is the difference between a double french horn and a single french horn?

The 2 most popular single french horns are the one in the key of Bb and the F horn. The Bb is more stable in the higher range because of a more broadly spaced harmonic series but it has intonation problems in the lower range. Also the tone is not as good as the F horn in the lower range. The F has better intonation lower but it is hard to pick out notes in the higher range. The double is the merging of both these horns into one. It has a change valve that allows you to pick which horn you are working with… most often the Bb horn for higher notes and the F for lower. Both horns share the same leadpipe and the same bell but using the Bb side cuts out lots of tubing.
